About Mt. Gilead Baptist Team
Mt. Gilead Baptist Church completely supports the efforts of the Foundation of Hope. Our Christian belief is built on a foundation of Hope. We hope and expect that we will receive benefits for promises given. As Christians, we are instructed in humility to value others above ourselves not looking to our own interests but to the interest of others. Mental Illness knows no favorites. We are all subject to the causes of mental illness and we believe we are all called to help those who suffer.Mt. Gilead Baptist Church started a fundraising team in 2015. The team captain, Jenny Quesenberry, had already been raising money for the Walk for Hope since 2010.
The Walk for Hope is one of the main events for the Foundation of Hope (FOH). All of the money raised annually by the FOH is given out as grant money to researchers in the UNC Psychiatry Department. These grants allow researchers to start up new projects in an effort to learn more about mental illness and discover new medications or therapies. Grant money is also given to local mental health initiatives.
It is truly inspiring to see hope in the faces of people when they first learn about the FOH. The members of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church believe in spreading this feeling of hope while spreading the hope of the Gospel.
Why am I fundraising?
In September 2009, during the weekly lab meeting at work, my boss, Dr. John Gilmore, mentioned he was being given the title of distinguished professor of the Thad and Alice Eure Foundation of Hope (FOH). He went on to describe what the FOH does. I remember sitting there, listening. I had been looking for an organization to volunteer for, something to feel a part of. I felt a hot wave of emotion through my body. I got a lump in my throat and my eyes started to tear up. I knew this was the Holy Spirit telling me the FOH is the organization I'd been looking for. Sure, it seems like a good story line for a Hallmark movie but it's true and it's what I believe. I have been raising money for the FOH ever since. In 2015, I was blessed to form a team at my church, Mt. Gilead Baptist in Pittsboro. I believe it's important for churches to raise money for local charities such as the FOH. One of the best parts of telling people about the FOH and the research that it supports is seeing a persons face light up when they realize the mental illness they've been dealing with is being researched. It really lifts their spirits to know there are people out there trying to develop new therapies and medications for mental illness. THAT is why I do this work...and because God put this urge in my heart.
