About The Zippers
June 24, 2006 is the day our father took his own life. We are not ashamed or embarrassed about how he died as society says we should be. See we have learned that suicide is the end result of untreated depression. Whether depression is a lifelong battle or situational it is a very serious matter and sometimes it ends with victim taking their own life. We often hear how suicide is selfish behavior. We strongly disagree. We think judging the victim is selfish behavior. We can't pretend to have walked in our father’s shoes or pretend to know what and how he was feeling. We can't pretend to have had our father's perception of reality during the last 6 months of his life. We can't pretend to know the feeling that 37 years of hard work and dedication be for nothing whether it was reality or not. We can't pretend to know the feeling of having the public who you so proudly served for 37 years turn against you whether it be true or not. We can't pretend to know what the feeling of being alone is like whether it is actually the case or not. Our father wasn't alone. He had his friends and he had is family supporting him while he slipped further and further away. He just couldn't see it. Depression is a terrible thing, it blinds you from reality. Until you have lived it or have had a family member live it you just can't wrap your head around it.
Brad and I have chosen to firmly get behind this wonderful organization to honor our father, Rodney (Zipper) Murray by turning the events of the last 6 months of his life into something that mattered and to show that his struggle wasn't in vain. Brad and I have decided to create a team and walk in the Walk of Hope 5k on October 8th.
The Walk for Hope is a fund raising event for The Foundation of Hope. The Foundation of Hope is a wonderful charity that raises money for research of mental health disorders. More importantly it allows Brad and I to have an open honest conversation about suicide. We are walking this year and every year moving forward in honor of our father Rodney W Murray. We have adopted our father's nickname for our team. We are calling our team "The Zippers". Will you please help us in honoring our father "Zipper" with a small donation to the Foundation of Hope? $1, $5, $10...whatever you can give will be greatly appreciated. Our team goal is $10000.00 We will be proudly walking together with our friends and family on Oct 14th in honor of Zipper, our father, our hero.
