Why am I fundraising?
I have participated in the Walk for Hope since 2000, and every year, I do so with greater conviction. This year, with so much chaos and uncertainty, the acute nature of these afflictions and urgency with which people need support is exponentially magnified.I grew up in a family where mental illness was an ever-present looming shadow — sometimes slipping around tucked in corners, sometimes blocking all light and overwhelming life with an undeniably adjusted reality.
With so little understanding and so few resources to help those with mental illness and their families, common practice was to hope that it might go away.
The Foundation of Hope fights for families like mine. Researchers and doctors continue to make progress in identifying and treating these illnesses; and educating and supporting us all to share strength with loved ones who suffer from afflictions they didn’t choose. I walk this (and every) year to support that ongoing research and care.
