We're just a cuddly bunch and we care a lot about this cause!

It is no secret--in fact, I believe keeping these things secret only contributes to the stigmatization and societal ignorance of these topics--that I have had personal struggles with my mental health. I credit my continued existence and current level of wellbeing with the many psychiatric professionals who have helped me over the years; my personal providers, researchers of medications and therapeutic methodologies that have helped me, even patients who have participated in studies. Each of these individuals, thousands of them, has touched my personal journey.

Psychiatric health is undervalued and misunderstood in our society; it is better now than at past times, but there are still many misconceptions, harmful stereotypes, and outright bias against the mentally ill still prevalent. The way forward is to continue increasing our understanding of these topics, and the scientific and medical community is the frontline of that battle. There is also still so much room for the entire psychiatric field to grow in general; new classes of medication, novel methods of treatment, and more we can't currently picture.

The stakes of this field of study are so high; I myself have had two acquaintances in my social circles lose their lives to their battle with depression. I have seen first hand how devastating and traumatizing that has been for their loved ones. In a perfect world, no one with mental illness would ever again lose their lives to their illness. It is a senseless and awful tragedy.

So, let's do this together! I have done this walk before, but am making one big change this year, which is to run the 5K. There isn't an official race this year, but I will be running the whole thing.

To help me on my way, I pledge to run 1 mile for every $20 donated to my campaign before the event. Hopefully you all won't make me regret that! :)
