About the walk
The Cathedral of Hope Mission Church will be sponsoring a virtual, family-friendly 5K (3.1 miles) Fun Run to help offset expenses associated with Karen Reid’s kidney transplant. We chose the month of June for our Fun Run, since she was officially diagnosed with reduced kidney function in that month. This virtual event will begin on Tuesday, June 1, 2021 through Wednesday, June 30th, at a location of your choice.

Why we walk
Karen Reid, a forty year resident of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, is a wife, mother, and grandmother, who has made many contributions to our community, ranging from teaching in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro School System, to chairing and co-chairing committees at our local NAACP, to volunteering at the Rogers Road Community Center,and daycare centers, as well as in individual public school classrooms. 

Mrs. Reid has a long family history of diabetes and chronic kidney disease. She has been a diabetic for over twenty-eight  years and now suffers from stage four chronic kidney disease.  Karen is currently on the University of Chapel Hill (UNC) Hospital’s Living Kidney Donor transplant waiting list. Our goal is to use a portion of the proceeds and donations to help pay for unexpected expenses associated with Karen’s kidney transplant, to offset some of the out-of-pocket expenses that the living donor will incur, in addition to donating ten percent of the proceeds and donations to the National Kidney Foundation. 

Details of the walk
“The Cathedral of Hope’s 5K Fun Run” will be held on June 1st -30th. Register on or before May 15, 2021 to take advantage of the $25.00 Early Bird Special ($15.00 for children twelve and younger)  Adult registration will increase to $30.00 after May 15, 2021, andt children age 12 and younger will increase to $20.00. Participants who register before May 15th will receive a commemorative tee-shirt. Please understand that those who register on or after May 15th will receive shirts while supplies last, but later registrants will receive a token of appreciation.                

Prizes
A prize will be given to the first person who registers, to the youngest person, to the oldest person, and to the first out of state person who registers. Prizes will be drawn  for one participant in each of the nine age groups.

How to donate
If running or walking isn’t something that you are able or interested in doing, you can still participate by sponsoring a participant, by purchasing commemorative tee-shirts (check out our website for details), by asking for donations from your network of friends and organizations or by making individual monetary donations by check.
