Friends of Lasell Field is a non-profit, volunteer-based organization formed to research, develop and share the potential for a new turf and track and field complex to replace the current John Whitin Lasell Memorial Field in Northbridge, MA. Funding for our project was passed at election by the Town of Northbridge in May, 2019.
Our group’s purpose is now to provide additional funding for the project as well as maintain funding for continued upkeep and maintenance of the sports complex. This also includes creating a memorial for WWII war hero John Whitin Lasell and thinking ahead to continued improvements at the athletic complex. With your help we can assure that the project is maintained and remains the legacy and memorial that this town deserves!
In comparison to our MIAA District (E) and Southern Worcester County League opponents, Northbridge Athletic teams, including our long list of youth programs, are at a competitive disadvantage.
The majority of schools across Central Massachusetts and the Commonwealth with similar enrollment to Northbridge now have one turf field (or more). John Whitin Lasell Memorial Field has the potential to be a premier athletic facility in the area by offering a 21st Century Education and Athletic Program. This will in turn attract families, improve the local economy, and impact generations of children with an abundance of opportunity. A synthetic turf field will directly and indirectly improve these statistics and also improve the culture and success of the various high school athletic programs.
In addition, the field space serves as a war memorial for John Whitin Lasell, a decorated World War II war hero who was born and raised in Northbridge. As the field condition currently stands, the memorial has gone from a source of respect and pride to an embarrassing and disrespectful eyesore for the town, as well as the family of John Whitin Lasell.
It is because of these reasons, as well as the unsafe grass conditions, deplorable bleachers, track and field, that Friends of Lasell Field was formed as a volunteer organization striving to educate the public and worked diligently to bring this project forward for many years to come.

- November 2020 Update:
- The field has been used by Northbridge High School Soccer and Field Hockey teams this past fall season, and the first game under the lights was in early November too!

- Dec 18, 2019 Update:
- Project Designer (Activitas, Inc) is working on final design.
- Construction starts in the spring.
- Friends of Lasell will be launching fundraising plans shortly; including Naming Opportunities, Donations, and Buy-A-Brick program.
- Nov 2019 Update:
- As the football season comes to a close, some of our final games will be played on the grass field at Lasell Field.
- Our project has just left the hands of a designer and is in the process of being put out to bid by our Town Manager.
- Once a project partner has been selected by the town, we will work to finalize our design and prepare for renovations to begin in early Spring
