COMPETITION FORMAT:

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art, combat sport, and self-defense system that focuses on grappling and ground fighting techniques; the discipline was designed to teach a smaller, weaker individual to properly defend against a larger, stronger assailant by using leverage and proper technique. Some of these techniques include the use of joint locks, chokes, and sweeps, amongst others. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and submission grappling have become increasingly popular over the years since their introduction to North America through a competitive setting. The Sunflower State Games welcome all grapplers and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners to participate in this event for only the seventh time in Topeka, Kansas.

  • IBJJF rules will be used for this tournament with one exception for the adult No-Gi intermediate, advanced, and pro divisions listed below. Click here to download and print the official IBJJF Rules. It is the responsibility of ALL participants to understand these rules. A brief Q & A session pertaining to the rules will take place prior to the competition.

  • No-Gi will use IBJJF scoring but will open up the submissions in the intermediate, advanced, and pro divisions. Intermediate divisions will allow knee bars. Advanced divisions will allow toe hold, bicep slicers, calf crushers, and everything of lower belts. The pro division will allow all submissions. Slamming and bending single fingers will still be illegal.

  • Additional Rules: Groin protectors and mouthpieces are optional

  • Event Divisions may be combined or broken down further depending upon the number of competitors in each class; i.e. Purple, Brown, and Black belts combined due to lack of competitors in a specific weight class.

  • Juveniles (Kids & Teen): Both Gi and No-Gi divisions will be in accordance with posted rules, but some divisions may be combined depending upon the number of competitors in each class and competitor weight. Male and female juveniles may be combined if competing in similar age and experience divisions.

  • Teens may compete in adult divisions with parents' consent.

  • Masters competitors may also move down in age to the adult category if they desire.

  • Heavier Kids/Teens may be moved up into higher age divisions if they are significantly heavier than those in their age brackets.

  • Participants are allowed to weigh in without their Gi.

  • NO SANDBAGGING: All competitors must compete within their rank or experience levels to ensure fair competition and promote safety within the event.

  • Male and Female No-Gi by Experience: Beginner is defined as up to two years experience (does not include experienced wrestlers), Intermediate is defined as 2-4 years experience or Blue belt, Advanced is defined as 5-8 years experience or Purple belt, Pro is 5 years or more wanting to compete with all submissions.

  • Medals will be awarded to the top three competitors in each age division/weight class.
