Why is Santa Fe Dam such a great place to swim?
Santa Fe dam is filled using well water. All run-off water from the San Gabriel River either continues down the river or is diverted to the spreading grounds. The recreational lake is only fed from underground. The one circumstance that this would be a concern would also involve the flooding of the entire park for flood control reasons, in which case no one would be allowed inside the dam. This question is definitely relevant when swimming in lakes that receive run-off or the ocean near river outlets but not Santa Fe Dam.
What is the likely water temperature?
65-70 degrees on race day.
What is a rolling swim start?
We are pleased to offer a rolling swim start. Similar to larger running races athletes will be placed in corrals with faster swimmers going earlier. An athlete’s race time will begin when they go over the timing mat before entering the water. Besides the advantages of avoiding the "washing machine" effect of a traditional wave start slower swimmers won't have to fear contact from faster swimmers in later waves and faster swimmers won't have to navigate through swimmers from earlier waves. Athletes will self-seed based on their typical 100 yard swim time.
CORRAL 1: Less than 1:15
CORRAL 2: 1:15 to 1:30
CORRAL 3: 1:30 to 1:45
CORRAL 4: 1:45 to 2:00
CORRAL 5: 2:00 to 2:30
CORRAL 6: 2:30 and above
Are wetsuits required?
Many athletes will chose not to wear a wetsuit especially for the Sprint distance when they weigh the time savings the wetsuit provides against the time loss getting the wetsuit removed.
How many & where are the Aid Stations located on the course?
The run course has aid stations approximately every mile serving water, Fluid Performance - Fresh Citrus, bananas, pretzels and Coke. The bike course has an aid station serving water, Fluid Performance - Fresh Citrus, bananas and pretzels
When should I get to the park? What about family & friends?
Athletes should get to Santa Fe Dam Recreational Center between 5am and 5:30am in order to have time to pick up their registration packets and get prepared in the transition area by 6:45am when the transition area closes. If your friends and family want to park inside the Santa Fe Dam Recreational Center they will need to be there by 7am. There will be no vehicular access after 7am. This is for the safety of the athletes. The alternative for friends and family arriving later is to park outside the Santa Fe Dam Recreational Center and take the short walk into the park. At 12 noon vehicle traffic can exit/enter Santa Fe Dam. If you need to leave earlier please plan on exiting the park by bike or on foot.
Can I really park my vehicle adjacent to the transition area?
Yes. Parking and T1/T2 transition are co-located in the same parking lot for super convenient race access. Vehicle access is from 5am to 7am. At 7am access to park is stopped until 11am to provide the athletes a closed bike course. Friends and family who want to arrive later will need to park outside the park and take the short walk in. Additionally, anyone that parks inside the park will not be able to exit until 11am.
